With the exhibition Günter Brus (February 17–May 20, 2024), Kunsthaus Bregenz presented the oeuvre of a Vienna Actionist for the first time. Seven days before the opening, Günter Brus died in Graz. The exhibition was the last that he actively worked on. Special attention was paid to Brus’s last series of pictures, created between 2020 and 2023 during the coronavirus lockdowns, which were exhibited at a public institution for the first time. The publication focuses on these previously unpublished colorful watercolors, which are characterized by a playful inventiveness. They depict mysterious edifices, eerie monsters, and precarious ego states and portray wondrous, surreal scenes of loneliness, fear, death, and dark dreaminess. The watercolor series is testimony to the artist’s profound examination of the themes of humanity and existence and provides intimate insights into Brus’s final creative phase.
