The transformation of everyday and urban detritus is one of Theaster Gates’ fundamental artistic strategies, one lending it to a new value as art. The partly newly created works and space-grabbing sculptures also following this attitude. Gates’ work as a strategy of archiving and recycling, preservation and innovation as a form of critical analysis of social issues are analyzed by Romi Crawford and Thomas D. Trummer. In a conversation with Hamza Walker, Gates himself explains his work and, in particular, his artistic concept underlying the exhibition in Bregenz. The exhibition »Black Archive« is impressively documented by large format installation images.
