The works on exhibition in Bregenz, including such well-known series as the »Jokes« and »Car Hoods«, demonstrate the extraordinary range of media which Richard Prince has employed in addressing American myths. The work’s fundamental strategies, such as seriality, are surveyed by Paul Black in his contribution. Whilst Kerstin Stakemeier explores the economic and political context of his practice, focusing on especially selected works, Yilmaz Dziewior concentrates in particular on examining the concept of the exhibition. The artist himself also contributes an essay shedding light on his artistic thinking. Reproductions of earlier works and in particular new ones which have been especially produced for the Kunsthaus, together with a carefully compiled appendix offer a comprehensive insight into the oeuvre of this American artist who has been influential in shaping contemporary art for decades.
